Wilton resident David Anspach, age 67, pleaded guilty to a tax offense in Hartford federal court on Wednesday, Nov. 15, the US Attorney's Office for the District of Connecticut announced.

According to federal officials, Anspach operates a construction and remodeling business. As a result of a civil audit of Anspach's 2013 tax return, the IRS found that his business receipts were unreported.

Some of these receipts were eventually accounted for as payments to workers. However, to offset the remaining receipts, Anspach gave fake documents to the representative who had prepared his tax return and was helping him during the audit, officials said.

These included fabricated letters and invoices that were meant to show he had paid vendors beyond what was reported on his tax return. These false documents were then provided to the IRS by Anspach's representative.

On Wednesday, Anspach pleaded guilty to one count of willfully delivering or disclosing to the IRS a false document, which carries a maximum prison sentence of one year. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Monday, Feb. 12.
